Use of a NIOSH approved dust/mist respirator (dust masks) is strongly encouraged and recommended when working with any dry materials or when spraying glazes.

Freezing

Moist clays, glazes, and other liquids will freeze. During the cold weather months, we may hold packages a few of days if you've ordered something that might freeze. Prior to shipping, we check the weather forecast between us and your location. If the predicted low temperature is below freezing, we won’t ship unless you specifically instruct us to ship.  If you tell us to ship, you are doing so at your own risk.

  • Moist clay often has to be wedged once it thaws.
  • If glaze freezes, it can expand and burst the jar. If that hasn't happened, most glazes will be fine when thawed and remixed.
  • Some glaze manufacturers use a type of gum in their glazes that is affected by freezing. If one of those glazes freeze, brushability of the glaze can be compromised.
  • These liquids are especially susceptible to freezing weather and would be ruined if frozen.
    • Liquid additives (Darvan 7, Sodium Silicate, Gum Solution)
    • Wax resist and latex resist
    • Menders (APT-II, Bray Patch, Magic Mender)
